Manchester brothers launch free Indian ‘Fakeaway’ book to help combat cost-of-living crisis.
A new, free e-book is teaching people the secrets of British Indian Restaurant (BIR) cooking so they can enjoy an authentic “fakeaway” curry at home and beat the cost-of-living crisis by cutting their curry bills in half.
British Indian Restaurant cooking is a unique style of Indian cooking that evolved in line with the British palate and the demands of adapting traditional Indian recipes for a restaurant setting. It has its own techniques and recipes – including the all-time British favourite chicken tikka masala.
A trade secret of BIR cooking is batch cooking a base gravy, which can be used as the foundation for a wide range of curries. The new East at Home cookbook outlines how to make this, and gives step-by-step instructions for creating everything from chicken tikka masala to lamb rogan josh, and from onion bhaji to keema rice.
The cookbook was created by Brothers Ali and Mohammed Zaman, both from the Stockport, Greater Manchester area, who recently launched their online East at Home food business.
East at Home makes BIR cooking at home quicker and easier, providing ready-made base gravy and sauces, spice mixes and more. The East at Home cookbook can be used with East at Home ingredients as short cuts, but it also explains how to make everything from scratch.
Ali and Mohammed founded their business in response to the pressures faced by curry houses (namely rising costs and staff shortages) and the public demand for an affordable and easy way to cook BIR dishes at home. The brothers have run takeaways in the northwest of England for three decades and decided to put their expertise to good use in new ways.
“While many curry houses are closing down, the British demand for BIR food is as high as ever,” says Ali. “We wanted to find a new way to reach customers and to demystify BIR cooking for people who want to do it at home. Our East at Home cookbook is part of that mission. We’ve had great feedback from it so far and we hope it will help many people enjoy affordable home-cooked curries that really taste like restaurant meals.”
